The impact of transfer of knowledge – Dec 13

In this forum we will discuss the impact of transfer of knowledge. Dr Syväjärvi will share experiences from silicon carbide, and about creating impact from transfer of knowledge in silicon carbide for the future R&D positioning.

An experience from EU projects is that transfer of knowledge activity is weak. Often a presentation is considered by researchers as transfer of knowledge.

It is not transfer of knowledge until the activity creates an action. Until then, a presentation is dissemination. An action could be that someone contacts presenter for more detailed information and wants to implement or use in some way.

Other experiences is that researcher are actually doing transfer of knowledge, but do not realize it. An experience we have from EU FET Open project SiComb is that we have to explain to many about what is frequency comb. The FET-Open (now called Pathfinder) EU projects are cutting-edge high-risk / high-impact interdisciplinary research with essential characteristics like Radical vision, Breakthrough technological target, Ambitious interdisciplinary research. They are early stage when basically there is no research done in that topic and approach. If it can be developed, it may have large impact in society.

The explanations to other people is transfer of knowledge. At a basic level but it is not dissemination character like a presentation. There is already an action that individuals want to know what frequency comb is about. Delicate balance what is dissemination and transfer of knowledge.

For research and career it will not be sufficient with publishing only. We have to create impact. Researchers will have less chances to be funded unless they demonstrate realistic impact creation. Those who have track record will have extra advantage. That is the reality. And no, impact description is not which Sustainable Development Goal that project can address. Realistic means that you show next step i some practical way.

The purpose of this forum is to discuss and share experiences about transfer of knowledge.

This Forum is part of transfer of knowledge activity in EU FET Open project SiComb.
